Algus grew up with the knowledge that although he was born to what should have been a noble family, the Sadalfas name had lost its former good standing, as a result of his grandfather's actions during the Fifty Years' War. His grandfather had betrayed his comrades to gain his own freedom and when word of that got out, the reputation of the Sadalfas family was ruined. It's likely that Algus was looked down on and faced humiliation because of this, making him determined to get even someday. Rather than feeling bad about himself, however, he is arrogant and convinced that he's still better than "peasant filth".

Despite his young age, Algus seems firmly entrenched in some rather unwavering narrow-minded beliefs, which he genuinely holds to be true. For instance, of the opinion that there are clear differences between people of a different status right from birth, a lower class person isn't someone Algus would consider even human at all. Instead, commoners are the equivalent of domestic animals, existing only to be used by those of higher birth and serve them. Algus doesn't hesitate to voice his views whenever he feels it necessary to do so and he can be very vicious and cruel with his attempts to put any commoners in their place – "You've been less than we from the moment your baseborn father fell upon your mother in whatever gutter saw you sired! You've been chattel since you came into the world drenched in common blood!" He repeatedly tells Delita that he'll never be anything but a powerless commoner and wants Ramza to realize that the Hyral siblings are "of lesser birth, and so meant to play lesser roles in life".

Apparently everyone remembering his or her place without going against it is a major issue for Algus, as he also tries to convince Ramza to see things his way and behave the way he should as a Beoulve (at least from Algus' point of view).

It's possible that Algus' behaviour may in part stem from insecurity and bitterness as well. When he recounts what happened to his family, he sounds sullen after Dycedarg's words to him ("Let me remind you, Argath, lest you forget your place. You are but another sword, not yet even knighted.") He knows what his current position is only too well. Although he's been working towards his goal of becoming a knight and restoring his family's honour, he's still only a knight apprentice, and with his family's past, all that supposedly places him far above the commoners he regards with so much contempt is that his family was once "respected as highly as House Beoulve". That's something he probably clings to and he feels the need to make sure that he gets the respect he thinks he's entitled to from someone, leading him to take things out on those he considers below him.

In general, Algus is not a friendly person unless he thinks he needs to show respect to those of higher status, mostly because he'd prefer to get into their good books and gain something from it. He has no qualms about thinking that way – after all, in his view, "people are used, and use others in turn" and that's the way things work.
